Erection is the scientific term for that state of the penile when the two Corpora Cavernosa (two tubular muscles) are filled with blood.
This means that the penile hardens and grows in length to accommodate the extra blood. Penile erection is usually the result of sexual stimulation, but is also known to occur spontaneously, most commonly at night, during erotic dreams.

How does an erection occur?

An erection starts with a sensory or mental stimulus of some kind, or both. An impulse from the brain and surrounding nerves causes the muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax and expand, which allows blood to flow in from the veins and fill the new space.

The penis contains two chambers called the corpora cavernosa, which run the length of the organ. A spongy tissue fills the chambers. The urethra, which is the channel for urine and ejaculate, runs along the underside of the corpora cavernosa and is surrounded by the corpus spongiosum.

When muscles in the penis contract to stop the inflow of blood and open outflow channels, erection is reversed.

The extra blood produces pressure within the expandable chamber of the corpora cavernosa, causing the penis to expand. The tunica albuginea when functioning properly, helps trap the blood inside the corpora cavernosa, this is what allows you to sustain an erection. When the penis muscles contract to stop the inflow of blood and open outflow channels, the blood leaves the penis and it goes once again flaccid.
